Defect

ON CERTAIN STREETCARS (DIESEL AND CNG MODELS) AND RT-52 DIESEL COACHES MANUFACTURED WITH AT-545 AND MT643 TRANSMISSIONS WHICH USE A MANUAL TRANSMISSION CONTROL CABLE. THE TRANSMISSION CONTROL CABLE MAY RUB AGAINST THE JUNCTION BOX POWER STUD LOCATED ON THE BOTTOM OF THE JUNCTION BOX.

Consequence

LONG-TERM WEAR CAN ALLOW THE POWER STUD TO SHORT TO GROUND THROUGH THE TRANSMISSION CONTROL CABLE, RESULTING IN ELECTRICAL ARCING AND THE IGNITION OF COMBUSTIBLE MATERIALS IN THE JUNCTION BOX COMPARTMENT.

Remedy

DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE VEHICLE TO DETERMINE IF EITHER THE POWER STUD INSULATION BOOT AND/OR THE TRANSMISSION SHIFT CABLE CLAMP IS MISSING. Defect

VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: STREETCARS. ABRASION TO INSULATION ON SOME POSITIVE POWER CABLES CAN RESULT IN THE GROUNDING OF THE POWER CABLE.

Consequence

THE ARCING AND HEAT GENERATED AS A RESULT OF THE GROUNDED CABLE CAN RESULT IN THE COMBUSTION OF INSULATION, PAINT, UNDER-COATING, AND OTHER CHASSIS COMPONENTS.

Remedy

OWNERS/OPERATORS WILL BE REQUESTED TO IMMEDIATELY INSPECT THEIR VEHICLES FOR POWER CABLE ABRASION DAMAGE AND REMOVE THE UNITS WITH VISIBLE CABLE DAMAGE FROM SERVICE.
